British Virgin Islands Ports Authority – Cruise Ship Pier Expansion Project

IDL created a joint venture with Belvedere Place Contracting and Meridian Construction to complete this design-build marine project on the island of Tortola in the British Virgin Islands. This project included dredging Road Town harbor to 40 feet and lengthening and widening the existing cruise ship pier to accommodate larger and more modern cruise ships. The team retained BEA Architects who had to consider design conflicts with existing piles while providing additional strengthening to berth the larger ships. The project was fast-tracked with design approval achieved in June 2014 and one side of the pier handed over in seven months and total construction by June 2015. Construction highlights include self-performing pre-cast concrete elements, hard dredging, and piling of 208 piles ranging from 24”- 48” diameter over 200’ long.

About 100,000 cubic yards was dredged and used to create approximately four acres of land adjacent to the pier. Work included shoreline protection and a passenger boardwalk to access a new cruise ship passenger amenities and retail venues.
