Safety
At IDL, pro-active safety culture is promoted and followed during work, travel to and from work and encouraged to take home after work; it is a part of who we are. Safety is a Team Value at IDL because our people are the most important asset we have and we want all our people to go home at the end of the day to their families uninjured, in good health and with a positive attitude.
Our program is based on our belief of Zero Harm. Safety does not protect you from something, it protects you for something, namely your family, friends and ability to do the activities that are important to you. IDL is very proud of the fact that we are among the leaders of the safest companies in Canada, internationally and in the construction industry. We utilize many tools to implement a world class safety program that ensures the safety of everyone. This includes those who work for us directly or as a sub-contractor and suppliers. Among the programs we use are Courageous Safety Leadership, Personal Big Five’s (PB5’s), Chronic Unease, Field Level Risk Assessments and our Acts of Vigilance Program.
Unique to IDL is the creation and implementation of our Acts of Vigilance (AOV) Program. AOV’s are a unique and innovative intervention tool that allows all employees, subcontractors, site visitors and other stakeholders to take meaningful action to correct a substandard act or site condition before it causes an incident. IDL’s AOV Program has become an important tool for the early identification of hazardous conditions and correction of unsafe behaviors on our work sites.
AOV’s are an expression of IDL’s core value “Take Care of Each Other”. AOV’s are made in a positive, supportive manner and promote discussion and problem solving amongst the crews and supervisors. Once an intervention has been made and communications have occurred, the intervener completes and submits a digital AOV card. Intervenors are always thanked for their efforts, their commitment to Health and Safety and they are then eligible for weekly AOV Champion awards which are presented to the weekly Champions among their peers. AOV Champion posters are distributed to all IDL work sites and posted on the job boards as a reminder of IDL’s commitment to safety and that all employees are “their brothers and sisters keeper”.
IDL’s AOV goal is for each worker to submit one (1) AOV per day. The AOV’s are reviewed by the Supervisors and provide real-time data trending and reporting of at risk conditions and/or behaviours that are then corrected in a timely manner. The AOV data is continuously reviewed in worker and management meetings to identify and correct unsafe trends. In 2019 IDL direct workforce completed 36,036 AOV’s and in 2020 AOV submissions increased to 40,244, showing that our employees, subcontractors, site visitors and other stakeholders are committed to “Take Care of Each Other”.
The IDL AOV Program has been proven to work time and time again and has resulted in industry leading safety statistics and safe work environments for our valued employees, sub-contractors and visitors. We encourage all members of our team to Think Different Build Better, and from this we work safer and produce a better product.
Our overall goal is a safe and healthy workplace for all workers within IDL and every other company that works with us. IDL goes beyond just meeting provincial regulatory standards and compliance, we exceed it.
Educating and mentoring our workers, as well as commitment to safety from our supervisors and management, is the key to our success. Our safety stats speak directly about the workplace culture of our employees and how seriously they take each others’ welfare on a job site. These positive figures are also a result of the Health and Safety program we have implemented within IDL. When we work with a focus on safety and quality we never have to question our production. We’re always on time, on budget and with everyone going home safe.
Core Values
IDL Projects Inc. has four core values that are the cornerstones of the foundation of the company.
TAKE CARE OF EACH OTHER | BUILD GREAT THINGS | BE INNOVATIVE | HAVE FUN
All IDL employees are directly involved with all four core values, promoting a safe culture and environment to work in so that they can go home, uninjured, to their loved ones at the end of the day. All of our employees are leant to us from their families, and IDL, in return, will ensure that we do everything possible to return them healthier, safer, and with a little more knowledge. It is this great culture that has made IDL to be among the best in the industry when it comes to completing work safely.
Over the course of 19 years of work, we have achieved some outstanding safety goals:
- IDL is COR-certified. A third-party external Safety Audit score in 2021 gave us a rating of 99%. Our next external Safety Audit is scheduled for the summer of 2025.
- Over 10 million person-hours worked without a Lost Time Accident.
- IDL is registered and in good standing with Complyworks, ISNetworld, and Avetta
This does not happen by luck or chance; it happens because everyone at IDL Projects Inc. believes it can be achieved.
